INTERNATIONAL EPISCOPAL CHARITIES While all dioceses and parishes may have their own unique charities, the national Episcopal Church oversees several charities on a more global scale. Simply click on a link below to find out more about the individual charity. While reading about a charity, you can click on its logo to go to its homepage, or on a "donate" button to give money. Episcopal Relief & Development (ER&D) Episcopal Relief & Development (ER&D) ER&D was established in 1940 by the Episcopal Church in the United States as the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief. It's mission was to assist refugees fleeing Europe during World War II. In 2000, its name was changed to Episcopal Relief and Development to emphasize its ongoing emergency relief work and its growing focus on long-term development and rehabilitation programs. The current focus of ER&D is to help save lives immediately after disaster strikes, to help rebuild after a crisis is over, and to create opportunities for those living in poverty. The ER&D's mandate comes from Matthew 25: 37-40 . . .
UTO was established at the General Convention of 1889. It's mission is to "expand the circle of thankful people." To achieve this mission, UTO encourages daily prayers, offerings and awareness of the abundance of God's blessings. Tangible offerings are collected in mite boxes. United Thank Offering is a year-round offering. Offerings are always welcomed, but two Sundays are set aside each year to focus on UTO. These Sundays are the Sunday closest to All Saints Day in the fall, and the Sunday following Ascension in the spring. On these Sundays, mite boxes are collected during the normal church offertory. UTO is very different from other charities. It is not a fund-raiser and it does not collect contributions or donations. United Thank Offering is meant to offer prayers of thanks to God. This is the major difference between UTO and other groups. The United Thank Offering is prayer oriented. It then gives tangible thanks for the blessing in the form of coins or bills. This money is an offering, not a donation. An offering is a thanksgiving to God - always. The money raised through UTO is given as grants to various projects each year. Grants go to both local and worldwide projects. These projects range from charitable organizations such as literacy or homelessness programs, to improvement projects for the Episcopal church such as youth centers, community halls, and diocesan buildings.
